CBR: WC13: SPOTLIGHT ON JAMES ROBINSON

It was only alittle, but James Robinson talked about Green Lantern to CBR:

One of those cool characters, Alan Scott, lost his partner Sam in the first issue of the series, but Sam’s death isn’t quite completely dealt with yet. “Breaking [Alan Scott’s] heart at the start is just good drama.” In “Earth 2” #12, the mystery of why Sam was killed leads into the arc about Wildcat. “His death leads into other storylines.”

The writer also spoke briefly on the designs of the “Earth 2” cast, citing Jay Garrick’s costume as one of his least favorites. “I cared greatly about how they looked. I’ve been far from happy with Jay Garrick, but I think Alan Scott’s costume is quite good,” he said. “For some reason, they were adamant about the costume for Jay Garrick. I hate the gold stripes up the leg. That drives me nuts.”

Nicola Scott talked to Newsarama about Earth-2 and gave us some interesting insights:

Nrama: Alan Scott had a look before the relaunch that spoke to his age. I know you had help on the costume’s design, but how do you approach the character in a way that maintains who the character is, but gives him a new twist?
Scott: His costume was designed by Joe Prado. And I love the costume. But he himself — his body language, his face and his personality type, and how it demonstrates itself physically — came out of discussions with James. It’s very clear the role he has to play in our universe, and the impact he has to have on those around him.
So he needed to be the natural alpha male, like everyone would just instantly, naturally defer to him, because of his physicality and his personality. He would be the team leader. The way James described him is, “he is our answer to Superman, now that Superman is gone.” He’s going to be replacing that archetype. That informed how I wanted to portray him. He’s quite tall and good-looking, and I wanted him to be beautiful looking and masculine. And really big in the shoulders. Very manly. And that he would hold himself in a very manly, confident way. He’s kind of cocky. We’ve started to see now, in the recent issue — particularly at the end of the first story arc…
Nrama: Yeah, he doesn’t want to join the team.
Scott: He’s just sort of like, “Team? What are you guys talking about? I can do this by myself. See you later.”
So yeah, even though it’s slightly an asshole move, it’s not that he’s a nasty guy at all. He’s just not been in that position before. He’s been the boss. He’s never needed to be a comrade or team player. He’s just been capable.
The second story arc and the third story arc will play into his evolution as a team player.

Alan Scott ranked number 8 in Newsarama’s 10 (Fictional) Comic Book people of the year

Here’s what the site says:

One of the most important — and, until recently, most public — figures in the media and communications industry, Scott’s 2012 has been marked with mystery: Initially reported dead in the Chinese train explosion that killed his long-time companion Sam just prior to the appearance of the new Wonders and monstrous “Grundy” in Washington DC, Scott has since reappeared in Gotham a changed man, eschewing publicity for privacy and becoming a virtual hermit.

Will 2013 see one of the world’s most well-known faces embrace life in a new way, and perhaps look into the identities of such figures as Hawkgirl, the Flash and Green Lantern?

And Joker ranked number 5.

Less an inspiration for us all as a chilling reminder of the darkness and insanity within our own psyches, 2012 saw the return of the Joker after too short an absence as the Clown Prince of Crime resumed his reign of terror in Gotham City, poisoning the water supply, kidnapping innocent civilians and even attacking the headquarters of the GCPD.

While his true motives remain as unknowable as ever, is it too much of a stretch to consider the presence of the Batman to be at least partially responsible?

Cool, huh?

NEWSARAMA: James Robinson Explores Wonders of New 52 EARTH 2

Today James Robinson, writer of Earth 2 was interviewd by Newsarama. Here are some interresting things he said about Green Lantern:

Nrama: Definitely. Although you have a lot of different characters playing a part in the comic, the first arc really focused on Alan Scott. This earth’s “wonders,” as the heroes are called, seem to be influenced by him. And yet, it felt like he was almost perfect until we saw him refuse to be a team player. Would you call that hubris? Is that part of the journey you’ll be taking with this character, this belief that he can do everything on his own?

Robinson: Well, that’s absolutely right. The thing you’re going to find out is that he actually needs Hawkgirl and the other heroes around him. But he has to find that out.

And I’ve read a couple of reviews where people were like, “That’s terrible that he doesn’t want to form a team at the end of issue #6!” But my feeling about that was, well, if they form a team, then it’s just like every other book. And it just becomes this thing that, I’ve kind of seen it before.

So I thought the idea of showing this journey of Alan Scott’s where he really discovers his vulnerability as he also discovers his superpowers’ invulnerability to be an interesting journey for the character.

And it will, as you say, color the — I guess no pun intended — color the other heroes and also the book as a whole as we sort of journey into bigger plotlines.

Nrama: Then to finish up, can you tease a little of what’s coming up in this next story arc in issue #9 and into 2013? A little more action related to Earth-2’s supernatural world?

Robinson: The next arc will show the man who will become Dr. Fate, it will establish whey he doesn’t want to be Dr. Fate, and why it terrifies him actually.

We’ll also integrate Wotan into the DC Universe. He’s one of Dr. Fate’s archenemies, and we’ll keep elements of what he was like in the past while making him fresh and interesting. But it will also focus a little bit on Jay Garrick and aspects of who he is as he finds his way as a hero, and we’ll meet his mother, who’s a fun character to write. And we’ll also see a World Army officer who will be a huge aspect of the future of Earth-2, although his involvement at this time will be small.

So there’s all that coming up in the future with lots of big magic and craziness, with a big plot that directly involves Green Lantern and the mystery of a train explosion.

Heartbreaking.

Wait, did they kill off his boyfriend to give him manpain?

It’s a gay variant of the “woman in the refrigerator”. I have a theory though. Sam will be back as Obsidian, avatar of the grey. He will start as a villain and then will control his dark powers and join the Justice Society.

That would be very cool, although I’m not sure how I feel about a character that was once Scott’s son being transformed into his former lover.
Do you think that resurrection, power-up, and villainy are sufficient to subvert the girlboyfriend in the fridge trope? I’m not adverse to the idea, myself. Talk about the past coming back to haunt the hero! I will be very disappointed if Sam stays dead, now.

Sam wouldn´t have been his son in an alternate timeline. Sam is not Todd. Totally different characters. If he was Todd, then it would be weird… >_<
I think that if Sam came back from the dead and that was planned all along, then it wouldn´t be a waste. Alan would have to fight the love of his life while already dating the Brazilian Robinson promised he would. Drama. Drama. Drama.

So… Alan Scott’s dead boyfriend comes back as the hero his non-existent son used to be.
Yea.

Robinson said in an interview that he had an idea to bring Obsidian into the New 52. It could be Todd actually. I’m just speculating. I’m just sad Sam got killed and I think it was a waste of a promising character.
